In the early morning an elegant Holly Golightly emerges from a New York taxi wearing a sleeveless, black satin, floor-length Givenchy cocktail gown. She eats a pastry, drinks her coffee and gazes dreamingly through the window  of Fifth Avenue’s Tiffany & Co, fashion history is made.

In Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Audrey Hepburn wears what would become perhaps the most famous little black dress of all time. A dress that  Christie’s auction house sold  for over $1 million in 2006.  Christie’s describes it as “An evening gown of black Italian satin designed by Hubert de Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in the 1961 Paramount film Breakfast At Tiffany’s, the sleeveless, floor-length gown with fitted bodice embellished at the back with distinctive cut-out décolleté, the skirt slightly gathered at the waist and slit to the thigh on one side, labelled inside on the waistband Givenchy”.

Hepburn first met Givenchy in 1953, when the Belgian-born actress described herself as “a skinny little nobody”. They successfully collaborated in Sabrina in 1954, Funny Face in 1957 and How to Steal a Million in 1966 but Breakfast at Tiffany’s would prove to be their style masterpiece which would re-define Hollywood chic.

In How to Steal a Million Givenchy designed the worlds chicest Masquerade mask to compliment a black lace cocktail dress and jacket worth $60,000 dollars at the time.

That mask went on to become a classic that would go with any Audrey Hepburn style evening dress.
